Issued to commemorate the centenary of Australian troops joining the allies on the Western Front. The issue depicts the AIF being introduced to trench warfare, before entering battle at Fromelles and then at Pozières and Mouquet Farm – conflicts that claimed a huge number of Australian casualties.
Also depicted is Matron Grace Wilson who was awarded the Royal Red Cross, First Class for her "distinguished service in the field". On the home front, Prime Minister Billy Hughes sought public support for conscription through the first of two referenda. Australians voted “no”, with conscription being avoided by a narrow margin.
